This winter we are following families as they head off to the slopes with their little ones. This time we head to scenic St.Moritz with The Fashion Bug blogger Laura Wills, her husband Mark and their daughter Mila. Find out more about the family’s adventures in their ski diary below…
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SKIING AS A FAMILY AND HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO?
We love being in nature and having an active holiday. You can ski all day and then have a lovely meal all together as a family at the end of it. There is something so peaceful and serene about being on top of a mountain.
We go at least once a year although we skipped last year entirely due to my pregnancy. We try to go for a few long weekends too.
St Moritz is my favourite destination. It is in Switzerland a few hours from Zurich. It’s great because the flight from London City is only 1.5 hours. We usually opt for the train from Zurich to St.Moritz as it’s very scenic, relaxing and Swiss trains are always on time!
SNOOZE IN STYLE
There are plenty of amazing options in terms of hotels such as The Kulm and Badrutts Palace.
For more low-key options try family run Hotel Steffani or Hotel Baeren.
They are also opening a Grace hotel soon! Or you can find some lovely flats to rent through booking.com.
I would suggest staying somewhere close to town (all the ones I listed are in town!)
EAT LIKE A LOCAL
On the slopes I love El Paradiso – it has a very cool vibe. In the evening we like Pavarotti for something low key or Baracca is super fun! Also worth trying Talvo and La Marmite!
WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO PACK?
Some fashionable ski gear! St Moritz is quite a glitzy town so if you want to blend in then go for brands like Moncler and Bogner (both of which have shops in town!)
WHAT WERE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO DOING AND SEEING?
Skiing, skiing and more skiing! I do like to stop off for lunch but as a family, we are all about the actual skiing rather than the long lunches.
WHAT ABOUT THE MILA?
My daughter loves being outside in the cold so this was an ideal destination for her! She is too young to ski but loved going for long walks and observing everything going on around her. We took her up the mountain a few times and many restaurants are very child-friendly. And once your child is old enough to ski there are many ski schools they can go to!
WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE THING THAT HAPPENED DURING THE TRIP?
It’s a very touristy thing to do but on New Years Day we took a horse-drawn cart up the mountain. You get amazing views and its a lovely experience (although the horses do smell a bit!)
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T SKIING?
I love going for an afternoon coffee/tea/drink at one of the old school hotels such as Badrutts Palace. It’s such a scene.
ANY TIPS FOR FAMILIES WHO ARE TAKING THEIR LITTLE ONES SKIING?
Do it! I think the sooner they get on skis the better. Just make sure they are wrapped up warm and take some cream to protect them from the cold.
