Gender reveal cakes are the latest trend in pre-baby celebrations. The baby shower tradition which is so commonplace in the United States has started to gain some real momentum here in the UK. Something that we are a little less familiar with is the concept of the gender reveal cakes and parties. The “gender reveal” party actually revolves around revealing the sex of an unborn child. In some cases even the mother will wait till the party to discover if she is expecting a little girl or boy.
HOW DO GENDER REVEAL CAKES WORK?
Gender reveal cakes are shared with guests at a pre-arrival party. The centre of the cake or each cupcake contains a blue or pink filling which when revealed indicates the sex of the baby to the party guests. In some cases results of an ultra-sound scan are concealed from mum-to-be and passed on to the cake baker so that they can prepare the cakes in secret. Blogger Carissa from the Pretty Hungry Girl Blog kindly shared her easy gender reveal cake recipe with us along with some cute pictures. She describes the process as the most fun she has had creating a desert ever.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING, TRADITIONS AT THE GENDER REVEAL PARTY
The tradition of the gender reveal party really exploded in the states over the past two or three years and several traditions have already become commonplace. Instead of cakes, a box containing pink or blue balloons is a fun way of making the big reveal. Alternatively a tiny pink or blue baby outfit can be prepared for the new for the new mother to unwrap. In other cases only one of the guests’ cakes will contain a telling coloured centre or the sex of the baby will be written on a piece of paper which guests must discover through a treasure hunt.
Perhaps you are not ready for the concept of the gender reveal party but certainly a cake with a pink or blue centre makes a lovely addition to a sophisticated baby shower tea with close friends and family.
