Born and raised in London and the English countryside, the designer and mother of four behind the brand, has a talent for creating timeless yet whimsical pieces that capture the spirit of kids today.
We caught up with Stella McCartney to find out more about her passion for sustainability, what inspires her and more.

HOW DID STELLA MCCARTNEY KIDS FIRST COME TO LIFE AND WHAT IS THE IDEA BEHIND IT?
I’ve wanted to do kids ever since I’ve had my own, and even a bit before. People kept asking me over the years when I would start my own kids’ line. Designing kids clothing is something quite personal to me because I’m a mother. So to be able to see my kids wearing something I’ve designed is very fulfilling.
But at the same time, I have had to think of what would appeal to other parents and children and create a collection that is not too precious, yet sustains a certain quality. Pieces that your kids will want to wear out on an everyday basis, but still special enough that you will want to hand down to your next child or your children’s children.
WHERE DOES THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COLLECTION COME FROM?
My kids collection is always inspired by the spirit and energy of kids in general. But I
also get inspired by some memories that I have as a child and try to incorporate a
little of that in parts of the collection. I also look at what we are doing for the ready-to-wear
collection and try to translate some elements into what would make sense for a kids range, so that there
is a connection between the two. Plus, we try to involve all the kids in our lives and make it a bit of a family process.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Fun, playful and modern.
YOU ARE A FAMOUS ADVOCATE FOR SUSTAINABILITY, IS IT DIFFICULT HAVING A BUSINESS AND MAKING IT SUSTAINABLE?
I was born this way, I was very lucky in that I swam in the soup of vegetarianism very early on.
I was brought up on an organic farm. I knew the word organic since day one, I’ve always been very
very mindful of our fellow creatures and our planet and the need to have great respect for
it and hold it in high regard. Because without our planet we have nothing and so from day one it
was in my DNA and it has never occurred to me to do anything in a way that is harmful and disrespectful to
mother earth and the creatures on it. So I try my hardest, but I’m not perfect.
I do think it is important to admit that and that something is better than nothing and I don’t want to make people feel guilty or bad.
I certainly don’t want to preach to people. All I want to do is really present information that
people can take or leave. We live in a day and age where information is critical and people all around the world can have access to it.
I’m very proud to be the first and possibly only vegan high fashion brand; I hope that more people would join. I’m showing people they can do it. I would say the majority of my customers don’t even know or care that my bag or shoes are not made out of leather.
And I’m very proud of that and I hope that I can be proof that you can be
successful and build a brand and also have a conscience.
