Charmaine Seah-Ong resides in perpetually sunny Singapore with husband Derek and their 2-year-old daughter, Charlie Rose. Charmaine and Derek run a small branding and marketing agency called Elementary Co. which just turned 3 last week. In this interview, she shares her way of bringing the autumn atmosphere to Singapore for little Charlie Rose.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS ENJOYED CELEBRATING THE DIFFERENT SEASONS?
Growing up in Singapore, I was never much of a fan of cold weather for most of my life. In fact, my husband used to say that I was such a ‘Summer Girl’ because of how much I disliked the cold. But all that changed about four years ago after I spent winter in Shanghai and I realised how much I enjoyed the cooler weather and being able to dress up in layers. I also experienced Autumn in New York and it was as magical as the movie of the same name!
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU ENJOY DOING AROUND THIS TIME OF THE YEAR?
Singapore doesn’t experience the full extent of Autumn like countries in temperate regions do, but it does get slightly cooler around November & December which is a welcome respite from the relentless heat the rest of the year. I do so love the changing colour of the trees as well and the seasonal drinks that Starbucks breaks out!
HAS LIVING IN ALWAYS-SUNNY SINGAPORE AFFECTED CHARLIE ROSE’S EXCITEMENT ABOUT THE CHANGING SEASONS?
She’s still pretty young but we took her to Hong Kong during Winter last year, and even though it doesn’t snow there, it was very cold and rainy. For some reason or other, she seemed completely unaffected by the change of temperature! I’m really looking forward to going on a family vacation in the winter, though.
HOW DO YOU BRING AN AUTUMNAL ATMOSPHERE TO SINGAPORE?
Picnics and dry leaf fights at the Botanic Gardens and feeding the swans at the Swan Lake, drinking hot chocolate and eating pumpkin spice cupcakes, dressing up for Halloween.
ANY RECOMMENDATIONS AND TIPS ON PLACES TO VISIT DURING THIS TIME OF THE YEAR?
The Botanic Gardens which is a UNESCO world heritage site would be one of the places, so would Gardens By The Bay where they put on seasonal flower and garden shows in an air-conditioned dome, Plain Vanilla Bakery for the best selected of baked goods and Universal Studios Singapore for Halloween Horror Nights!
ANY TIPS ON BRINGING SEASONAL ELEMENTS TO THE LIVES OF LITTLE ONES WHEN YOU LIVE IN A TROPICAL COUNTRY?
Through arts and craft activities, books on different seasons and dressing up!
With Thanks to Charmaine-Seah Ong of Elementary Co. X
