Since becoming a mother I’ve changed and learnt a lot…
I CAN LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT MAKE-UP AND THE WORLD WON’T END
Pre-children – and still whenever possible, I haven’t turned into a total skank – I was a full face, black winged eyeliner kind of girl and wouldn’t dream of nipping to the gym without a touch of tinted foundation but these days there just isn’t time. And, oddly enough, people don’t recoil in horror at my bare face.
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE REALLY HURTS
My youngest was in the hospital several times in the early weeks and I was terrified. Heart-wrenchingly, so SO painfully physically, mentally and emotionally terrified. The love is just so overwhelming for these little people we bring into the world. I remember thinking I must always remember this feeling whenever I stress out about random crap. Nothing else in the whole world matters as long as my babies are safe, happy and healthy.
I LOVE CHILDREN’S CLOTHES
Before my daughter was born I just worked with womenswear but pretty much since falling pregnant I’ve worked more and more with childrenswear and I adore it. There are so many cool, exciting labels. It’s just so much fun! And kids look great in everything.
DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
If a friend doesn’t text me back or lets me down or the food shop is late or I miss the bus… it doesn’t matter.
TIME IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MONEY
We recently went on holiday with my parents. We went to the beach, my daughter rode a pony, we went to farms and on boats… but her favourite thing was running around in the garden playing chase with us all.
I STILL NEED MY MUM
I’m independent. I’m 33. I left home aged 18 to live and work in London. But some (a lot of) days I just think I need my mum; who is amazing and comes to stay with us fortnightly to help out. Having children has made me appreciate her so much more. I once asked her when you stop worrying as a mother and she said she’d let me know…
MUMS ARE COOL!
Before having children I’m ashamed to say I probably did dismiss ‘mums’ as maybe not being quite as finger-on-the-pulse, stylish or hard working as ‘non-mums’. Hangs head in shame. But this is SO untrue. The mothers I know (both in person and those I fangirl on social media) are the coolest, most hard working, stylish but also honest, friendly, kind, creative women I’ve ever met. I have so much respect for each and every one of them.
WHENEVER I OPEN MY LAPTOP TO DO A BIT OF WORK OR CHECK EMAILS IN THE EVENING, ONE OR BOTH OF CHILDREN WILL DEFINITELY WAKE UP
Right on cue, the baby just started screaming…
