Founder of Momtrends, an online resource for ‘moms craving a fashionable life’, Nicole Feliciano is on a mission to provide busy women with a daily dose of style. Over the past seven years she’s built a mini-media empire, all whilst juggling a busy home life in Brookyn, New York, where she lives with her husband two young daughters.
Producing videos, events and a style-packed website, she works alongside her brilliant team to interpret trends for women working with less time, less energy and possibly less money than they had before the kids came along.
She says “I graduated from Vanderbilt with a degree in English Literature, and spent a decade working in fashion–most notably as an executive with Polo Ralph Lauren. I parlayed that fashion experience into my mission at Momtrends. The Momtrends vision is about embracing the joys of being a mom while still acknowledging the fashionista that lurks behind the stroller or wheel of the SUV”.
Following our Google+ Hangout discussion about Kids & Technology (which you can watch Nicole take part in here) we caught up with Nicole to find out more about what motherhood means to her.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FAMILY?
Active! We are always on the move. We love to travel, play sports and spend time outdoors.
HOW DO YOU THINK MOTHERHOOD HAS CHANGED YOU?
I’ve become ever so slightly more patient (a tall task). The big change is my ability to focus and delight in small things–discovering an interesting bug in our vegetable garden or noticing a new dog on our walk to school. Having children has taught me how to pay attention. When I’m with my girls, I’m focused and really enjoy being in the moment.
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOTHER IS?
Getting to read children’s books all over again. I am passionate about reading and no matter how long and exhausting my day cannot resist story time with my girls.
WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT YOU’VE HAD AS A MOTHER?
Anything involving travel. I love seeing the world through my daughter’s eyes. Don’t get me wrong, travel with kids is a tall task, but worth every bit of effort. Right now I’m surviving this bitter cold winter in NYC remembering last summer’s trip to Sicily and envisioning the girls frolicking on the beach.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WANT TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN?
To live life with passion. I want them to have a hunger to learn and master new things and never to be afraid to try and fail.
IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT MOTHERHOOD THAT’S SURPRISED YOU?
The hours. I thought working retail was tough. This store never closes.
HOW DO YOU MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF?
Skipping out on sleep. 8 hours just isn’t possible with all the things I want to do. I also have a moms running group. We run between 7-13 miles every Sunday. We get up early so we can squeeze in a long run with all our other responsibilities. They are all working moms with young kids, so we have a lot in common. Not only am I getting in a great workout, I’m also getting recipe ideas, empathy for a tough work week and plenty of laughs about parenting fails.
AND FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW MOTHERS?
Remember to laugh. If you can’t see the humor in the situation all is lost. Having a partner that can help find the humor in parenting really helps so be sure to keep your connection strong with your spouse or partner.
