Beau & Rooster

Beau & Rooster is an ethical and sustainable kids sleepwear brand founded by Andreas, Linus and Dan; three fathers inspired to create cool sleepwear for their children. Based out of Paris and the beautiful Southerly Western tip of Sweden, they combine original prints and high-end quality with GOTS certified organic cotton made in Europe. We caught up with co-founder Dan Nathan to find out more about the collection, how they met, what inspires them and more.

HOW DID BEAU & ROOSTER FIRST COME TO LIFE?

We always refer to this being a happy coincidence. Andreas and I were in the process of moving to Paris with our wives and kids and we literally met at the school gates on the very first day. That was the starting point before we even knew it!

I have been working in the fashion industry for twenty years – at Levis, adidas, H&M and then as a consultant, including a year at the wonderful Swedish kids brand Mini Rodini. Andreas has a background as a photographer and being part of a couple of start-ups,  whilst Linus has been working in advertising and brand marketing. So there was an interesting mash-up.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DO A KIDS LINE?

We really wanted to start something fun. With kids of our own and my background in the fashion industry, it felt like the right thing to do and the timing was perfect. We have a free ride pass to do what we want. It’s hilarious some of the stuff that our kids come out with when we test our designs and products on them. Also, it’s a very cool feeling designing stuff that our kids and their friends will wear and of course to see our products on our customer’s kids.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?

This made us laugh. We spent many months trying to find a name that resonated well and eventually once we had decided on a name, it was then rejected by our trademark lawyer (Linda thanks for helping us out)!!! Give a task to three men and look what happens!! So we started again but decided to let the name come to us. Then literally one day Andreas just popped out the name Beau & Rooster, and there it was. Not too romantic but we love it!

WHERE DOES THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COLLECTION COME FROM?

This could be walking down the street, seeing a movie, hearing a song, reading a book, going to an exhibition or even waiting for the train! You never know what will pass you by. We are also starting our collaboration series and want to give aspiring artists an avenue for their design work.

WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS AND HOW ARE THE COLLECTIONS MADE?

We are laughing again. For me it’s a confusing process, I’m not the designer !!!! But I know Andreas and Linus love it and this is what makes a healthy partnership. It’s a collaboration that starts with Andreas working out themes and creates mood boards. Then the guys dig deeper into the themes and refine the ideas, sketching and testing. Eventually, all three of us go through the designs and make a final decision.

WHAT DOES YOUR WORKSPACE LOOK LIKE?

It’s a combination of stylishly mad. We work from home and we share a small design studio together. We like to mix business with a few cups of coffee, our sketch pads and our calculators.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACHIEVE WITH BEAU & ROOSTER IN THE COMING YEAR?

We are 14 weeks old and the coming year is full of wonderfully challenging projects. Our aim for 2017 is that Beau & Rooster increases our brand awareness in the UK, Scandinavia and Japan. To establish a loyal customer base and to start to be one of the go-to sleepwear brands in Europe. That’s not too much to ask for, is it?

WHAT ARE YOU FASCINATED BY AT THE MOMENT AND HOW DOES IT FEED INTO YOUR WORK?

That’s a nice question. We are realistic about what we are doing, the world is in a delicate place and let’s face it at the end of the day we design and produce clothing. We are conscious that we are all lucky enough to be doing what we are doing. Therefore the decisions we make for our work are ones based on how we as a business impact society and how we could potentially give back to those who are less fortunate than us. This is something we are working on for the future but it needs to be done in a way that is appropriate.

AND FINALLY, IF YOU HAVE TO DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

Energetic, playful, sustainable.
